How to measure foot length:
  • Stand with your heel up against a wall and place a tape-measure under your feet.
  • Check your longest toe to your heel on the foot length measured in millimeters.
  • When your size is between two sizes, choose the smallest size because Birkenstock usually fits slightly larger.
Explanation width :

Choose the correct fit by reading the instructions below:

normal

The coloured symbol indicates that the footbed is made for the normal foot. When you wear shoes that are made for normal feet, this is the right width for you.

This is the normal width in the Netherlands.
Birkenstock Germany calls this symbol schmall/stretta

wide

The non-coloured symbol indicates that the footbed is made for the broad foot. When you wear shoes that are made for broad feet, this is the right width for you.

This is the wide width in the Netherlands.
Birkenstock Germany calls this symbol normal

A large amount of product is available in two widths; make sure you select the right width. You can find the image on the inner sole of your Birkenstock sandal.

Beware: On the box you will find the German widths. The feet of Dutch people tend to be somewhat smaller than those of Germans. This is the reason that the coloured symbol is indicated as ‘normal’ in the Netherlands. On the box you will find the indication ‘schmall’ because this is the German size.

Material information

Below is an explanation of the materials used in Birkenstock shoes and sandals:

  • SMOOTH LEATHER: Our smooth leather feels very fine and even and has a slightly shiny surface. Thanks to its high elasticity, tensile strength and resistance to abrasion, it is durable against external influences, thus guaranteeing a long life. Moreover, it is maintenance-friendly and breathable.
  • BIRKO-FLOR: Birko-Flor is a skin-friendly, tear resistant, easy-care material. The upper layer of this material has a leather-like structure, the lower layer is processed with soft felt.
  • BIRKO-FELT: Birko-Felt is made of a wool pulp mixture and synthetic fibre felt. As a result, the tissue together can practically not tear and it is still air-permeable and skin-friendly.
  • BIRKO-FLOR NUBUCK: Gives the material of the surface layer a special finishing process which does not only look like leather, but also feels like it.
  • PATENT LEATHER: Maintaining all positive characteristics of the natural leather, patent leather has an upper layer with a fine coat of paint.
  • NUBUCK LEATHER: The natural surface of the leather is buffed. This gives the leather a velvety appearance.
  • GRAINED LEATHER: Birkenstock leather gets a particularly expressive strength due to the special bark optics.
  • SYNTHETIC: Synthetic is a term for all artificially developed materials, which are characterized by durability and diversity.
  • ALPRO FOAM: Alpro-Foam is mainly used for the production of beach sandals and leisure clogs/sandals. The raw material consists of a granular material which comes into the desired shape by heat. This makes Alpro-Foam particularly soft and elastic. The foot is supported by the foot bed with each movement. Alpro-Foam also has shock resistance and anti-slip qualities. This depends on the model. Alpro-Foam is shock-resistant and is therefore used in sandals with soft foot beds.
  • ALPRO-CELL: Alpro-Cell is lightweight, flexible and multifunctional. Alpro-Cell is mainly used for beach sandals and leisure clogs/sandals. With the low weight of Alpro-Cell, it is hardly noticeable that you have shoes on your feet. Alpro-Cell products are ideal for the holiday, the pool and/or beach.
  • PU: PU is mainly used for the production of beach sandals and leisure clogs/sandals. PU is very soft and elastic. The foot is supported by the foot bed with each movement.  For example, PU also has shock resistance and anti-slip qualities. This depends on the model.

  • EVA: EVA is an elastomeric polymer that produces materials that are "rubber-like" in softness and flexibility. The material has good clarity and gloss, low-temperature toughness, stress-crack resistance, hot-melt adhesive waterproof properties, and resistance to UV radiation. The lightweight EVA is ideal for sandals.
  • MICROFIBER: The high-quality microfiber which is used for the Birkenstock shoes has a delicate, nubuck leather-like appearance. This material is very light, very breathable, durable and comfortable on the skin.
  • ELASTIC: The elastic Birkenstock uses is made of textile-like elastic material. The elastic is of high quality and has a strong stretch so that it does not loosen quickly. It has a soft and comfortable feeling.
